1. The fighting whites shirt is a nonviolent way of protesting a very deep problem in our society today. I like how they made a difference without making a huge deal about it. It was a good way to get the word out there about the negative veiws of Native American mascots.
2. I like Native American mascots. I don’t like however, how people choose to act in them. If you are wearing a shirt from your school you need to show respect and act mature so when you are out in public people see that you are representing your school very well. People will see you in that unifrom and think of your school differently if you act immature and foolish. If you are a mascot or wearing a tshirt with your school emblem on it then if you act right, you will set a good example of the kind of people that go to your school and that are in your community for other people to see.
3.The question of whether American Indian-based mascots and team names should be banned in public schools will not be resolved anytime soon, in large part because of the personal nature of the arguments. People will disagree on these issues for many years to come. It is in our history, not just how we treated the indians but how we have had indian mascots in our community schools for as long as i can remember. I also do not see this issue being resolved anytime soon.

I say that if people want to wear “Fighting Whites” T-shirts, they can go right ahead. I’m not offended by a bunch of people stereotyping whites with their shirts. I can look around me and see that most of the white people I know don’t fit into any stereotypes, so any stereotype I may see is totally inaccurate.
I believe that the mascot names were meant to honor the Indians. Why would people want to name themselves after something they didn’t like? Would I name my team “The Communists?” No, we would be called “The Libertarians!” In the same way, a team named after Indians would serve no purpose other than to honor them.
The question of whether American Indian-based mascots and team names should be banned in public schools is unfounded. I don’t see any reason why they should be banned. Indians can look at themselves and see that they don’t fit any stereotype created by a sports team.

A few people could get offended by it but I don’t think that it was their purpose to offend the Native Americans. I don’t really think that the name is bad because they didn’t mean to offend them so they shouldn’t be mad about it.
#2 The author contends that “some who oppose eliminating the names argue that the intent of the American Indian mascots was not to discriminate or offend but rather to honor American Indians.”
Whether you believe it or not I don’t think that they wanted to honor them and I don#t think they wanted to offend them. I guess they were only looking for a ‘cool’ name and were not thinking about what that could trigger.
#3 finishes the following sentence found in the text: The question of whether American Indian-based mascots and team names should be banned in public schools … is still going to be a question, but when so many Natives get offended by that they should ban it but I kind of think that we have a free speech and we can have the names we want to have. It depends on the names whether they should ban it or not.

2. I don’t by any of it at all. In my opinion they just picked a good name and really did not care about anything else because what else is their out their; soon schools would all have the same mascot because of no variety.
3. Will not be resolved soon because of constant bickering and worthless fighting over this subject. People will sue and people will complain but untill they can cough up the money to change mascots and traditions then they should shut their traps.

The shirts are very racial and a terrable shirt. Anyone who puts “The Fighting Whites” on the back of their shirts should be punished. It is a awful thing to do, why would you depict the Native Americans? That is just awful of a team to do so. They are jsut disgriminating the Native Americans in no means necessary.
#2
This argument is believable in my standpoint. There are some teams out there that are trying to honor Native Americans. they want to honor and keep thier religion group going. The teams that dress and act like idiots when cheering for a certain team should not be able to have the name then.
#3
American-Indian mascots team names should not be banned. If they have a reason to keep thier name they should ask the Natives if they can do so with their permission they should be able to keep their names then. If they have good reason to keep using their names then there is no reason to take it away from them.

2. No, I think that when the schools were created years ago that the Indian was meant to offend them. But now most people just see the Indian as their mascot. It always has been and they don’t even realize that it could be offensive.

No because thats like the Indians calling their teams negros and saying it honors african americans. It doesnt honor them it hurts their reputation and dignity. Its kind of like bullying on a racial level.

They were responding to another T-shirt that a high school had that had “Fighting Reds” and a logo. The school received media publicity, and others even wanted to buy the shirts. It showed what they believed in a simple way that many people were attracted to.
2. I do not buy the argument that the intent of the American Indian mascot was to honor American Indians. If their intent was to honor them, they would honor their wishes now and change their mascot. It’s expensive, yes, but if your intent was to honor them, and you aren’t, wouldn’t you want to change that?

However, I don’t think that mascots were originally used to “offend” the Native Americans. I think it was just a fearsome thought. The pioneers feared the Indians, why not make a mascot? I don’t think the shirts should really affect anyone. Why is it okay for us to stereotype everyone but when someone else does it, it’s NOT okay. Everyone is human and can say and do what they want. I’d be tired of people treating me like dirt and eventually get to my breaking point where I can’t take it anymore. Everyone has a voice, opinion, and right of speech. So why not use it?
Not at all, they can say whatever they want. We thought it was okay to just take their land and not give them options. In a way it’s honoring them because they are sticking up for themselves after a long time of being treated wrong. Just waiting this long probably wasn’t the best choice. I can understand why they waited though, because they got attacked by us for their land and they wouldn’t want it to happen again.

2. I can buy that argument because if the school only knows of the sterotypical American indian than they don’t know any other way to depict the Natives. The stereotypical indian is also more fun than what a Native might be like so they are not trying to discriminate or offend them they’re just trying to make their mascot more fun.

I don’t mind the fighting whites shirts if they want that as there mascot they have that right. It is creative way to try and get back at us for our Indian mascots we have. I want one of these shirts because they care so much that they are trying to get under our skin anyway they know how and if we show that we don’t care there will be no issue over the shirts.
I buy his argument because there are some schools that try to honor the Indian one major example are the Florida State Seminoles. The Seminoles got permission to have them as there mascot and have been honoring them ever since.
I don’t think Indian mascots should be banned from school it is part of the school history as well as a large part of America’s history. If we change every team name that people didn’t like we might as well not have mascots. The Indian should just embrace the mascots name and try to find the good in them.

2. American Indian mascots honor American Indians. If you have ever watched the florida state seminoles, You see Chief Osceola Ride out to the middle of the field and stick a spear on the 50 yard line. Veiwing that as discrimination would be ridiculous, that is total honor for American Indians.
3. If we are going to banned American Indian – based mascots bcause they are discriminationg, then we need to get rid of Notre Dames name “The Fighting Irish”. We also need to get rid of the “Black Nights” of Army. If they want to banned American Indian – based mascots they need to look in more detail at school names and mascots so they dont single the American Indians out.

Yes, I do buy this argument because I feel like schools just want to be represented by a mascot that is strong and powerful. Most schools probably didn’t even think about what the Indians would think of their mascots. If the Indians used to own the land a school is now, they may honor the Indians buy using them as their mascot.
…should be left up to the tribes around the school or the ones being represented by the mascot.

I feel the fighting whities doesnt bring much more than mockery to a group of people. I do not believe our indians signify mockery towards the natives. Although i do understand where they are coming from.
2.Yes i agree. I think its more to honor the warriors or bravery in battles that the Indian people possesed. I stated that previously in the first response. I think they dont want to be seen as a war loving culture, however some indains were war loving. It possibly brings up a bad memory of the natives past. However i firmly believe mascots and team names do not depict mockery. “The fighting whities” however does, yet i dont think most people really care primarily due to the fact that they believe they are better and dont really care what the indians say.
3. is that of importance to few, but the Indians themselves. However things should be changed so the Indians stop complaining and are happy for once. We never really have listened, maybe do something for them once.

1. I think “The Fighting Whites” shirts are hilarious. We use Indian names for mascots because they were great warriors and fighters. Were not making fun of them or being derogatory towards them in any way. Yes, some of the rituals that the schools use are stereotypical, but thats with any mascot. For example, the “Fighting Irish” of Notre Dame’s mascot is a small ginger. Stereotyping Irish people as gingers, but you don’t hear them complain. “The Fighting Whites” shirt is merely some people who are offended by native american mascots trying to make a point that its prejudice. They didn’t do a very good job at it though.
2. Yes I buy this arugment. For most people I think that they take pride in having an Indian mascot. It signifys power and strength by actually havign a real life example to live by like an apache, navajo or sioux indian mascot. Most people can give to craps if schools have an indian mascot or not. Its an arugment that Indians are making because they feel like its discrimatory towards them, but yet the majority of the Indian tribes take pride in being recoginized by the white man as a symbol of greatness. Its the small minority of indian groups that are still clinging on to the old ways of what the whites did to us and are trying to find anyway to disconnect themselves from society.

“The Fighting White” shirts are very hurtful to other ethnicities other than whites. The shirt is supporting racism. A multicultural team should not tell their team whites are the best. This will hurt the basketball team because their multicultural students would not want to play for a team that believes whites are the best. The college should not have made the shirts so racist. They are supporting white supremacists when they put the saying “Everything will be all white.”
This argument is valid. Many schools wanted their school mascot to be one of bravery and courage. The Native Americans were very brave and courageous in defending their land and the schools were just trying to pick a mascot that will represent the school well.
The question of whether American Indian-based mascots and team names should be banned in public schools is yes. You do not see schools with African-American or Hispanic mascots. So why should Native American mascots be any different. When a school has a Native American mascot they inevitably open the Native Americans to stereotyping and mockery. There shouldn’t be Native American mascots in non-native schools.

1.) The shirts are a good way of showing how stereotyping somebody’s race can hurt or offend them. I am not offended by the name, but I’m pretty sure that a lot of people are offended by their nick name.
2.) I do not think that schools will name their mascots to honor them, I do not think that schools are trying to mock Native Americans if there team is named after Indians. I think it is OK to have team names such as the “Indians” as long as you don’t have any deragatory chants or cheers. But names such as the “Redskins” are not respectful and should be changed.
3.) Schools should be allowed to keep their team names, but they should be changed if it is something life the “Redskins” or the “Red Men.”

1: “The Fighting Whites” is honestly a really, really bad name for a school team, it would cause so many problems with not only natives but also black, Asian, and Latino races also. It is really biracial because it is only going to please the white ethnicity and it could make white people think differently about other colored people.
2: It really depends on how they are treated and how well they use their mascot and team names to prove this argument. Honestly it really shouldn’t matter what the mascot and team name is as long as it isn’t actually referring to Native Americans in a negative way.
3: The question of whether American Indian-based mascots and team names should be banned in public schools is determined on how they use it and why they use it. If they are going to be proud and praise they’re school name and Mascot then it should be fine. Schools that use the team mascot and name to “slaughter the redskins” or “Shoot down the Mohawks” is completely unacceptable and should be changed at once. Also they should have permission from any Native Americans in their school or local if they may use that name without conflict.

1. I love the Fighting Whites shirts because I think they are pretty hilarious. I don’t think there is anything wrong with the name. Schools are entitled to whatever mascot they want. All sorts of mascots are stereotyping ethinc or working class groups, such as the Norte Dame Fighting Irish or the MOC-Floyd Valley Dutchmen or the Purdue Boilermakers. It is not just the Indians that have mascots that stereotype. There is nothing wrong with stereotype mascots, this why I have no problem with the “Fighing Whites”.
2. I buy this argument because some of the mascots are to honor the Native Americans. Any one of the mascots with a specialized tribe, (Fighting Sioux, Seminoles, Chippewas) are supposed to be honoring the Native Americans. Those Native American groups were a very large part of the history of the areas where the mascots are found, so the school’s are trying to honor the Natives.
3.The text states that “the question of whether American Indian-based mascots and team names should be banned in public schools will not likely be resolved anytime soon, in large part because of the personal nature of the arguments.” Also, our government and politicians have a lot more important issues than dealing with Native American mascots.

3. The quote is: “The question of whether American Indian-based mascots and team names should be banned in public schools will not likely be resolved anytime soon, in large part because of the personal nature of the arguments.” This also isn’t the major concern of the government at the time. Also that is why we should just ask consent to use them and if it’s a no then don’t use it and if yes just proceed on and use it. It’s the simple solution and it makes the most sense.

#1 I don’t think that the t-shirts should have been made with the quotes they did. There are other ways to say that we shouldn’t stereotype without singling out races. I think it provoked people to be more stereotypical than before.
#2 No, we often argue that history is written by its victors. I feel as if it is a sense of disrepect to a group of people. Too many stereotypical images are engrained in so many of us that when we see the word ‘indian’ we tend to automatically think of scary alcoholic people. And we often think that ‘they don’t live around here so it doesn’t matter’. It goes beyond the finanical hardships that would occur if legislation banned the use of American Indian mascots, it’s hits home to some people within the school systems. While stereotypes may be where to place the blame, you can’t stop a person’s opinion and removing the use of American Indian mascots may be a wake-up call to many Americans who have looked at Natives as bad people.

I say they show a great point on how we have been treating the other races around the US. Its definitely funny in a way but more then anything it just shows how terrible we have been towards the indians and towards the blacks and etc.
Yes. This is i see it for sure. Why would someone want to make a team just to make them look bad. Thats not gunna happen. The sports administrators will probably agree with me that there is no harm done in this time because the team is definitely trying to make them look good and do their best. NOt to mock them.

oh i and i believe the mascots should not be taken away. The schools who chose that name made it that way to make them look good. I know its kind of bad when u look at it because there isnt a THE ASIAN team or THE NEGROES but i believe it is fine. We arent causing harm so why mess with it.

1) The “fighting whites tea shirts” are good for some reasons. Every school should have a name to tell us who or what they are. If they didnt for example the wolveriens go to a basket ball game and the other team aint got a name so we say look at the other team. Who is the other team? They need a name.
2) I do buy this because the natives have been around for a long time. and they should be honored. Natives have always had a weird beleves but they should have never been treated the way they taht the were.
3) The question of whether American Indian-based mascots and team names should be banned in public school will not likely be resolved anytime soon, in large part because of the personal nature of the arguments.

1. I think the shirts are hilarious. They try to show us how steriotypes affect us, but in reality, it isnt offensive. We fight because we are dominate and it keeps you in power. Clearly since we are the most dominate country in the world.
2. I dont think that they were to offend anyone. “Chiefs” is the name of power, and everyone knows that except the indians apperantly.
3. The question of whether American Indian-based mascots and team names should be banned in public schools will never happen. For one, it is way to exspensive to change, you would have to change the names, the uniforms, the colors, the street signs, the stadium. ect. if they want to pay for it someone will surely change it.

1) I think the white shirts are racis because it makes it sound like the natives never fought and thast whites are way better then them.
2)I think that they weren’t trying to have the indians as there mascots because they are trying to make them feel honored i think they were just discriminating against them and thought using the indians as their mascot because they dont care we kicked them off their land lets use it kind of thing.
3)…will not likely be resolved anytime soon, in large part because of the personal nature of the arguments.

In any circumstance Fightin Whites shirts are just rude. No matter how much you think it won’t affect people of other races it will.
It wasn’t intentionally used to hurt the Indian’s, but I also don’t think it is honoring them. Why don’t they ask a group of Indians how they feel instead of assuming.
Cannot be resolved. It takes years and years to come up with a good answer, and like you said there are no simple answers to complex questions.
